Foinikounta
Foinikounta is a small seaside village on the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese, in the Pylos-Nestor municipality of Messenia, about 9 km east of Methoni and roughly midway along the coast between Methoni and Koroni. It had a population of 573 at the 2021 census. The village is known for a run of Blue Flag sandy beaches sheltered by the Messenian Oinousses islets offshore, and a seafront lined with tavernas and watersports rentals draws mostly Greek and other European visitors through the summer months.
History
The site was known in antiquity as Phoenicus, a small port on the Messenian coast mentioned by the geographer Pausanias and traditionally linked to Phoenician traders. The present village dates only to the 1840s, when it was settled by refugees from Crete and by Arcadians and was originally called Taverna after a local inn; it took its current name, Foinikounta, in 1930. Agriculture remained the mainstay of the local economy until tourism took off from the 1980s onward, and the beaches and coastal setting now support the village's economy alongside farming.
